Friends of Cundall
Thank you so much to Heather and Graham Raine from ‘Raines of Helperby' for catering for the ladies' lunch, the food was magnificent, and thank you to everyone else who helped make the event such a success. The Friends are having a ‘Bring & Buy' cake stall on 17th October, the Friday we break up for half term, at 3.00 p.m. in the Pre-Prep car park and 5.00 p.m. in the Main School car park. If there is anyone who is able to help by making cakes and buns we would be very grateful. DK
Harvest Festival
Thank you to everyone who came to the Pre-Prep and Main School Harvest Festivals and for your wonderful harvest gifts. All the produce from both services was taken by pupils to the Barnardos Springhill home in Ripon. Thank you to all the mums who decorated Cundall and Topcliffe churches. The £283.90 raised from the Pre-Prep retiring collection will be split equally between the York Arc Light Charity and Cundall Church and the £868 raised from the Main School service will also be split equally going to York Arc Light and Topcliffe Church. Thank you all for your generosity and support.
Some of the baskets that had produce in them have been kept and are now on the front door step, if parents would like to claim theirs.
Sponsored Ride/Bike/Walk - 2nd November
Sponsorship forms for this are available from the School Office or Pre-Prep.
TRANSPORT WEEK
North Yorkshire Moors Railway
After a false start - who says men have a good sense of direction - Reception, PP1 and PP2 set off for Pickering to catch the 11.00 a.m. steam train to Grosmont. What a fantastic day out, the weather was glorious and we saw so many steam trains it was wonderful. We saw a lot of engines that are being renovated, but it took true ‘Thomas' fans, Henry and Matthew both aged 4, to explain that the mystery engine was in fact a breakdown train! AK
Go-Kart Race
On Wednesday morning in beautiful sunshine all the Main and Upper School pupils gathered on the slope leading down to the games fields to witness The Cundall Go-Kart Grand Prix. There were fifteen entries in all, ranging from Barnaby Jenning's ‘Box on Wheels' (a plastic box from one of the form rooms taped to a skateboard) to Jack Strawson's ‘Jack Mobile' (an adapted wheelchair). Each contestant raced against the clock starting at the top of the hill (with a helpful push from a friend) straight down the straw bale lined track to the steep bank and the chequered flag at the bottom. They all performed brilliantly, but as weird and wonderful as some of the contraptions were nothing quite compared with the sight of Mr Kempton decked out in a race suit - 2 sizes too small! The results were as follows:
1st place: Matthew Joyce - ‘The Bullet' 18.50 seconds
2nd place: Sam & Oli Proctor - ‘The Plough' 19.72 seconds
3rd place: William Shelley - ‘Eco Kart' 20.03 seconds
Special mention should go to James Brading who lost a wheel on the way down and to William Newby for the most spectacular crash of the day. It was great fun, with the winner being presented with a bottle of fizzy apple juice which was duly shaken up and sprayed over the spectators. Congratulations to all those who took part.
Poem by Form 4 - Set 2
Yellow and black,
My taxi is a bumble bee,
Collecting people pollen
And dropping them off.
Beeping his horn and Shouting,
He's trapped by traffic
In a maze of streets.
As his rage rises,
So does his voice,
And so does the fare.
Ouch! I've been stung.
Hambleton & Richmondshire U14 Area Hockey Rally
The girls had a brilliant day of hockey and must be very proud of winning all their matches and not conceding any goals. It was very hard for a group of young girls against teams that had a full side of Year 9 girls. The team beat Thirsk School 6-0 and Easingwold and Wensleydale Schools 2-0. In the semi-final they beat Stokesley School 1-0 and in the final against Queen Mary's they won 1-0. The U14 girls now go to the National Schools County Round on 4th November. LW
TENNIS
Last Sunday four children; Harry Tribe, Robbie Webster, Oliver Welford-Carroll and Marcus Nunn all played in an orange tennis tournament at the Academy. It was very exciting as it was so close. The core was a draw with St. John Fisher and Knaresborough all winning the same amount of games. They all played very well as, for most of them, it was the first orange match they have played. M-RB
Lawn Tennis Association
The LTA would like everyone who plays tennis at Cundall to be members. It is free and for those who like to play more matches you can be rated so every time you play a match you sore points and improve. The more members the school as the more Wimbledon tickets the school may get. You need to log on to www.lta.org.uk to join on line, it is quick and simple. Any problems contact the LTA county office: 01405 768888, when you fill in the club section please name Cundall Manor. Thank you. M-RB
LTA Play Tennis Initiative
The Academy is allowing non-members to play on the outdoor floodlit tennis courts. They are available from 22 September '08 - 30 April ‘09 for half price (£4.00 an hour) when booked with a voucher. Vouchers are on the table in the entrance hall of Main School or phone the Academy on 01423 524052 for information. M-RB
U12 Hockey v Queen Mary's Won 3-0
This was an enjoyable match and it was also quite closely fought with some good hockey. LW
U11 Hockey v Terrington Hall Won 6-0
The girls had a tough game even though it appears to have been quite a big win. Our girls however played in their positions unlike the opposition who played down the centre of the pitch. There was also some very accurate tackling from the defence in particular. LW
U12/U13 Netball v Woodleigh Won 9-1
A very good start to the season. Some great footwork and passing on the move. Well done girls. CC
U10 Netball - Won 7-3 against Queen Mary's, Drew 1-1 against Woodleigh
A great match on Saturday against Queen Mary's with the girls moving confidently around the court. We were more static against Woodleigh though and need to become much more determined to make the ball ours. Unfortunately the shooters also had very little luck! JS
THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE JUDO SESSION NEXT WEEK (THURSDAY 16TH) FROM 5.15-6.15 P.M. BECAUSE OF THE FORMS 1&2 MUSIC/POETRY EVENING IN THE GYM AT 7.00 P.M.
FORMS 1&2 SWIM SQUAD IS CANCELLEND ON THURSDAY 16TH BECAUSE OF GALA V WESTVILLE.

What a fantastic sight last Saturday morning as 7 boys' teams arrived at school full of excitement ready to make the trip to St Olaves, York. It took 3 minibuses and a full coach to transport all the boys who were representing the school, surely this is what Prep School sport is all about.
The matches themselves were always going to be challenging and indeed we lost more games than we won, even Mr Heron's magical unbeaten run came to end.
The highlight amongst the results was the 30-5 victory for the1st XV. In a flowing game the boys' always seemed to have the edge. Tries from Arron Johnson (3), Felix Adams, Charlie Capps and Lewis Levesley sealing the win.
The Lions also produced a thrilling performance ending a cracking game in a 5-5 draw. Mr P's ability to referee in dress shoes and a rather snazzy green number was something to behold!
Yesterday we entertained Sedbergh and in a physical encounter the 1st XV lost their unbeaten record going down 7-22. The 2nd XV led by Barnaby Jennings recorded a fantastic 19-10 victory and the Under 11A team ran out 26-0 winners.
Saturday sees a record at Cundall when 8 boys' and 4 girls' teams take to the fields and courts against St Mary's Hall. I am particularly looking forward to the 4th XV and Under 11C teams making their debut in school colours. Good luck to all! J.Sample
