Cundall Manor Upper School News
Wednesday 21st January 2009
January the 21st , Christmas and the New Year are already a distant memory and by the time the next festive season is upon us Thornton will have spent a term in their next school (not to mention the sitting of GCSEs in the summer). A sobering thought...
There is plenty ahead other than exams though, including hockey tournaments and photographic courses, not to mention DofE training and wilderness trips, to name but a few. One highlight will be the Upper School school play - The Importance of Being Ernest. Don't forget to book your tickers early though (available direct from the Georgian Theatre Royal box office on 01748 825252) - a sneak preview indicates that it has the potential to be the stuff of legends!

Inter house competitions
December saw the first of the inter house competitions. Pupils have been pursuing ‘Merits' throughout the term for good work and consistent effort (with Beech the overall leaders) but it was now time to test their mettle in other areas:
It was a bitterly cold afternoon when the players took to the pitch for the mixed hockey, which was played in very good spirit and with great determination. Each house played the other two twice over the course of the afternoon. Willow bowed to early pressure from Oak, led by Alex Pern, but drew against Tor Peter's Beech team, who then went on record a victory against Willow. It was all down to goal difference and Oak clinched it by a margin of several goals.

The second event was the air rifle competition which demonstrated that there is a lot of hidden talent in Upper School in this pursuit. Each house was represented by two teams who were tested in a variety of practices, the favourite being the speed round of knocking down the tiles as fast as possible. In the end Oak were once again victorious with Beech second and Willow third.

Bacon Butties in Abundance!
Last Saturday Philip Fieldhouse, Will Johnson, Bertie Webber and Alex Shepherd helped to make and sell bacon butties during the main school inter house matches. It was a hugely successful morning: in total we raised £280 which will go toward this year's India trip. A huge thanks to all those involved.
