Upper School Performance of  ‘The Importance of Being Earnest'

What a fantastic evening!   Those who braved the rain on Tuesday to get to Richmond were rewarded with a truly spectacular performance of Oscar Wilde's very funny play.   The beautifully restored Georgian Theatre was the perfect setting.  All the cast put in such amazingly good, slick performances that it was very easy to think of them as seasoned professionals rather than 15 year olds.  The sight of Alex Pern (in frock and wig) as Aunt Augusta was reminiscent of the wonderful actress Joan Plowright.  Philip Fieldhouse (Algernon) and Bertie Weber (Jack/Earnest) would put some of our leading actors to shame and their love interests Maddi Wright (Gwendolen) and Victoria Peters (Cecily) were superb!  Harriet Pepper (Miss Prism) and Alex Eadon (Rev. Chasuble) were very good together making a very convincing governess and clergyman, in fact the whole cast was brilliant.  As well as Upper School parents it was good to see so many Main School parents and pupils there and also members of the general public who came to watch.  Colonel Weld, Miss Smith and Miss Martola together with some Upper School pupils should be congratulated on the wonderful stage set and costumes and of course a huge thank you to Mrs Riddell who put in an awful amount of hard work to produce and direct such a wonderful production.  An unforgettable treat!

Rotary Technology Tournament - Catterick

Plant Swap

Now that Spring is here many of us will be turning our attention to the garden.  Spring bulbs are bursting and buds are swelling as plants begin to emerge from their winter hibernation, you may be thinking that some plants need lifting and dividing.  On Saturday 21st March there will be a plant swap at school from 10.00-12.00.  An ideal opportunity to find something new for your garden.  Happy plant hunting.                          AF

Cake Sale    Well done to Lizhi Singleton and all the Form 6 pupils who helped run a cake stall on Monday, they raised £49.85 for the Persian Cat Rescue Centre at Bedale.

Oakham Tournament

The U12s got off to a great start beating Wellow House in their first match.  Unfortunately things went down hill from there.  The overall winners were St. John's College who we had a great match with but lost 7-4.  Ellie Watson and Olivia Kirby were voted players of the match on two matches by the Oakham umpires.

The U10s struggled to get into their stride for most of the morning matches and found it difficult to play against some rather tall opposition.  They played some great netball in the afternoon however and fought back to take the lead in a very close semi final.  Charlotte Hoggan was player of the match in one game but the whole team should be commended on their determination and positive outlook.

Excellent passing and attacking play in the U9 team.  The U8s had their first match and worked hard and learnt a lot about playing in a match situation.  The U13s had their first loss of the season against a very strong Bramcote side but never gave up.

Runners Up

Another busy week for the sports department with 16 boys' teams representing the school. The annual fixture block with Aysgarth was as competitive as ever. The 1st XI and the Under 11A teams both recorded excellent victories with all matches close affairs. I was delighted with the opportunity to get more Under 9's on the field and I hoped they enjoyed the experience.

The rugby sevens were  led this week by the Under 11s, who under Mr Shepherd's leadership made the final of the Malsis Sevens on Sunday.   The 1st VII had a tough week with too difficult draws and some rather large opponents. The U12s, weakened by the inclusion of some of their age group in the 1st VII performed commendably at Oakham. Exeat brings no rest I'm afraid as the U13s and U12s take part in the Hambleton and District Area Sevens Tournament and Arron Johnson along with Felix Adams will represent the North against the South at Rugby School on Sunday.                                                                                                            J.Sample
