The pen is mightier than the hockey stick

This week, not only have our boys and girls  challenged each other on the hockey pitch, the contest has continued into the classroom as representatives from each camp competed to offer match reports for this week's newsletter!

In the blue corner....

"History, it is said, is written by the victors and that is why this report on the recent boys versus girls hockey match is being written by the boys.

With the U16 team away at Pocklington the real competition took place at Alanbrooke barracks with elements of the North Yorkshire Girls Champions team and a sportswoman of considerable repute (admittedly tennis) taking on a team that consisted of amongst others, three actors, namely two butlers and Algernon, a displaced woodworker and a man of indeterminable age but receding hairline. The boys had, as the girl's captain kept reminding them, no chance. 8 goals later she was still of the same opinion despite the fact that all the gaols were scored by the boys - 3 coming from its key striker who had previously only lifted a hockey stick in curiosity rather than in a competitive situation. After a few rousing words from the girls captain at half time and a shortening of the pitch, the girls came storming back, reducing the score to 8-5. The boys would like to say that it was out of courtesy but in all fairness it was the skill of the girls that resulted in some fine goals. However the boys quickly regrouped and put away a further 5 goals to enter the last minute 13 - 8 up. At this point the girls cried next goal the winner and swept down the pitch to score another goal and claim victory - sadly for them they could claim victory as many times as they like - it was a win to the boys because we never agreed!!"

In the pink corner...

"Yesterday's games session at Alanbrooke Barracks brought a new level of a competitiveness and enthusiasm (on the girls' part) to our weekly hockey match. In the first half, the girls (amongst whom were several county players) showed good grace and perhaps too much generosity, in allowing the boys to take an 8-4 lead. In a fine show of skill and finesse during the second half though, the girls showed their true mettle, only to be beaten by a final flurry of goals from their opponents which brought the score in the final minute to 14-9. A last minute long corner for the boys prompted the suggestion from the girls that the next goal should win the game. Sure enough, who should score the next goal but the girls, victorious at last! It was a fantastic play by the girls' team."

In the interests of (almost) fairness, we'll leave the last word to Mr Chubb:

"It was a tremendous afternoon's activity and played in excellent spirit by both teams. I was proud of their performances and even happier about the fact that I am a boy and won!!

Leckby Wilderness Weekend

As we wave ‘adieu' tomorrow morning to the first Leckby posse to head for the hills, here's a timely reminder for the Leckby II Wilderness team that their kit check is now on Wednesday 25th March, between 5.15 and 6.00pm. Last week's kit check for the first team proved an invaluable opportunity for each pupil to be get some one-to-one help and advice from Mr Kempton on which essentials to pack, and how to minimise their load.

India Fundraising

This Saturday morning will see the return of the now legendary car wash crew - please do come along and support this superb fundraising event.

And while you're there, don't forget to pick up a beautiful Easter Basket. Handmade by members of Upper School, and filled with Easter delights, these beautifully presented baskets are another innovative way our pupils have come up with for raising money for the India trip.
