DOMINO CASCADE 2009

The tension mounted and hands were shaking as over 100 pupils participated in Cundall's first every domino Cascade.  The quality of the domino displays was exceptionally high but in the end it came down to who had nerves of steel.  William Shaw and John Brading snatched the title with "Freshwater Boot Fish" and, with less than a point in it, Team Alpha and Domino Busters were very worthy runners up.  Well done to all who took part - the team work displayed was in a true Cundall spirit.  Special congratulations go to all the finalists.  They were as follows:

Golden Bullets:         N. Cavadias, A Sladden, S Drinkwater, R Webster, B Grandison

2009 Latin Reading Competition

The culmination of weeks of rehearsal and lots of laughter came to fruition on the evening of March 11th when two intrepid Minimus teams, imaginatively named by Miss Kuit as group A and B, set off to Leeds University to perform in Latin the story of Pyramus and Thisbe in the primary section of the almost internationally acclaimed Latin Reading Competition. Charlotte's roar succeeded in scaring away the opposition from other schools. Despite the lions refusing to wear their tails on the night and Edward having to be helped into his tunic by a judge, both groups gave impressive performances. I am glad I didn't have to judge them. Was Jonty's roar really more scary than Charlotte's? Did George and Edward kiss (through the wall) more saucily than Freddie and James? Both Matthews narrated perfectly. Both walls gave a solid performance. After a nail biting wait, (or was that just because no refreshments were provided?) the judges awarded £30 worth of book tokens to group B.

My thanks must go to both groups for their hard work and good humour, who represented our school so well:

Group A: Matthew Garrett, James Gordon, Freddie Fawcett, Jonty Banks and William Barker;

Group B: Matthew Ford, Edward Kettlebrough, George Bentley, Charlotte Saxby, Alfred Mitchell and Alice Foster in both groups.

Many thanks also to all the parents and pupils who came along to help and support.                                       PK

Does anyone have a surplus of catmint?  We would like to plant some at the front of the school.  Please contact Mrs Fife.

Karate

On Saturday 14th March, the school Karate Club held its third grading for Orange belt (7th Kyu).  The pupils had to demonstrate kicks, blocks, punches, combinations, paired routines, kata and fighting.  All worked hard throughout the morning, and everyone gained a first class pass from the senior federation instructor.  Congratulations to: Edward Hall, Josh Hall, Ryan Hawkridge, Toby Bell, Alexander Blott, Louis Taylor, Lewis Hernaman, Harry Halsall, Sam Gell, Thomas Hoggan, Matthew Ford and Mrs Sara Hall.  We now have a lot of work to do for Green Belt in July.                                                                                             DR

This week was another busy and exciting one in the rugby sevens season. The highlight was undoubtedly the Under 11 success at the Durham School Sevens. In the sixteen team, tournament the Cundall boys topped their group and successfully progressed through the knock out stages to the final against Terrington. In front of a large crowd the team produced a fantastic performance winning 35-0.  It was an excellent team performance and the first time the school has won this prestigious event.

The success of Thursday had taken its toll on the boys and a mixture of injury and illness meant depleted teams for St Martin's Ampleforth and St Mary's Hall. Commendable performances however saw the Under 11s win the bowl and reach the semi final in the respective events.

The 1st VII in contrast had a difficult week. Still ravaged by injury the boys did well to reach the final of the plate competition at Durham with victories over Grindon Hall, Mowden Hall, Hurworth House and Newcastle School for Boys before defeat against Terrington in the final. Then on Saturday found life tough at Mowden being unable to get out of their group.

Next Monday is the highlight of the season as the 1st VII travel to Rosslyn Park to play in the National Sevens Tournament, hopefully we will have time to regroup and welcome back some players from the treatment table before then.

In football the 1st XI continued their 100% record with an impressive 3-1 win at home to Bramcote in which Harry Halsall scored twice. Only Red House next Wednesday can now prevent Tom Wilkinson's men from going through the season unbeaten.

The 2nd XI and U11B also recorded wins against Bramcote 2-0 and 2-1 respectively. Whilst the 4th and 5th XI found life difficult against St Martin's Ampleforth on Saturday.

This Saturday sees the annual House Football competition where all Prep School boys will do battle for their Houses.

U13A Hockey Tournament at Durham School

On Thursday 12th March there were 2 tournaments taking place for the U13 girls.  One at Durham School, by invitation only and one for the Hambleton and Richmond Area Trophy.

I was delighted to be able to field, from a total of 21 girls in Years 7 and 8, a team for each tournament.  The U13A team went to Durham where they had an enjoyable tournament coming 3rd out of eight teams with Dame Allen's (Newcastle) and Durham high taking 1st and 2nd place.

The girls as always showed great determination and played with a high level of skill.  Well done girls.

U13B Hockey Tournament at Richmond School

On Thursday 12sth March the U13B hockey team took part in the area tournament held at Richmond School.  Despite playing the A teams form the other 8 schools they performed with grit and determination to gain a very respectable 5th place.  Well done.

U11 Hockey Tournament

The U11s played at St. Martin's Ampleforth in a round robin tournament of 9 teams on Saturday.  Their lack of work on Astro Turf surfaces showed and it was through their hard work, particularly form the defence, that they were able to come 2nd and were all presented with medals

U10 Netball v Terrington

The team seemed to be affected by the incredibly sunny weather and were a little slow to get started.  Once we got into our stride the girls put together some nice passes with Charlotte Hoggan, Alice Foster and Charlotte Saxby working incredibly hard.  Verity's accurate shooting led us to a 13-11 win.  Well done to the whole team.

U9 High 5 Netball Tournament at Terrington - won

The U9 girls played some excellent netball managing to win all five matches.  A total of 14 goals were scored in the semi-final and final without one being conceded.  An excellent afternoon of netball.  Well done girls!       IR
